Our History

B.I.G. was founded in 2004 in Virginia as an S-Corporation by Patrick Barron, Carlton (C.D.) Goodiel, Robert Guerra and Marc Sanchez. The founders wanted to create a place where the employee came first and foremost, even before the client. We believe that our employees are our product and if we provide for and take care of our employees this will lead to a great customer experience and ultimately an ongoing partnership between B.I.G. and the client.

The principals of B.I.G. began working together in the early 1990’s at a company named Tel-Star Communications. Tel-Star was founded in 1987 by Will Newland and quickly grew to become one of the most respected Voice/Data companies in the DC area. C.D. Goodiel began working for Will in 1992 as a field technician, progressing to Lead Technician and Senior Project Manager. Patrick Barron joined shortly after as the Director of Sales and the company really started to grow. In 1994 Rob Guerra joined as a part-time field technician in the winter and summer during college and upon graduation started working full time as a Lead Technician progressing to a Sales Engineer and Account Manager.

In the mid to late 1990’s things really start to take off for Tel-Star with some big contract wins for multi-building campus environments such as NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Oracle and Northrup Grumman sites all over Northern VA, DC and Maryland, the Orbital campus in Loudoun and the new UUNet/MCI/WorldCom, now Verizon, campus in Ashburn. The hard work and persistence of the team paid off and allowed Tel-Star to grow exponentially. Marc Sanchez came on board as a field technician and quickly rose through the ranks to Lead Technician managing and installing the more difficult and high profile projects. Tel-Star caught the interest of a national startup called NetVersant and in 2000 was sold to the Houston based company. As the economy shrunk and NetVersant made adjustments, employees began to leave.

In the early part of 2004 talks became serious about forming a new company. These early meetings shaped the business that would become B.I.G. We would use the lessons learned and growing pains of the small Tel-Star and the failures of NetVersant to build an employee-centric company that would be extraordinarily successful.
